Heathcliff leaves their home, a Yorkshire manor in a rough and romantic countryside, but eventually comes back to take revenge: Everyone who has mistreated him and kept him away from his only love has to suffer now. At the end his passions are powerful enough to ruin both himself and those around him, which turns him into a typical Byronic hero. Emily Brontë (1818-1848), the second eldest of the Brontë sisters, is best remembered for her only novel Wuthering Heights. Regarded a literary classic now, it was quite controversial at its time. The amorality of its complex central character shocked the critics who also were not yet accustomed to the non-linear narrative that later became a prominent feature of modern literature.
