Sir Sydney Sunderland expanded our understanding of the nerves and their injuries with his books Nerves and Nerve Injuries, published in 1968 and 1978. and Nerve Injuries and Tlieir Repair: 4 Critical Appraisal, published in 1991. These tomes, which Smith (1969) called "a monumental treatise on nerves and nerve injuries." were and continue to be gold standards in the field of peripheral nenes. In fact, in regard to peripheral nerve injury. Sunderland's name has been immortalized with the use of the "Sunderland classification." Sunderland began medical school at the University of Melbourne in 1931 and was influenced by neurologist Leonard Cox and anatomist Frederic Wood Jones. He worked in Cox's clinic and assisted neurosurgeon Hugh Trumble. He graduated at the top of his medical school class in 1935. and in 1938. At the age of only 27, he became the chair of anatomy at the University of Melbourne. Sunderland worked with Pio del Rio-Hortega who had been a student to Ramon y Cajal and who introduced him to nerve staining techniques that would aid him in studying axon groups of peripheral nerves, their responses to injury, and their subsequent degeneration or regeneration. Sunderland also worked with Wilder Penfield's group in Montreal. There, he developed methods for mapping the cortical areas governing the motion of the limbs. Sunderland had the good fortune to collaborate with some of the great neuroanatomists of his day. including Wood Jones and Le Gros Clark. This training in neuroanatomy and clinical neurosciences aided Sunderland in treating the many nerve injuries that he encountered during World War II. and his experiences in the war resulted in the appellation "father of modem nerve surgery." Sunderland would go on to hold many positions and titles during his long career, including Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. University of Melbourne. In tribute to his pioneering efforts in studying and treating injuries of the peripheral nervous system, the Sunderland Society was established in the early 1980s and continues to meet today." R. His best-known contributions are his descriptions of the internal topography of peripheral nerves and his recognition that nerve fiber bundles that innervate specific muscles or sensory areas may vary in their relationships with one another at different levels within a nerve. The large body of work he produced is summarized in the 2 editions of an encyclopedia-like monograph-Nerve and Nerve Injuries -which has been termed "the Bible" by Narakas, a pioneer of brachial plexus surgery; and in the book Nerve Injuries and Their Repair, published 2 years before his death. Both books are internationally acclaimed as classics. He also wrote 134 original scientific articles, most of them as either the first or only author."
