I shall first discuss the difficulties involved in dealing with concepts which were once of neutral connotation, were later loaded with emotions and ended up as political catchwords. ‘Imperialism’ is a good example: In ancient Rome, Imperium was nothing more than the military authority of a magistrate. The long and winding road from Imperium to ‘imperialism’ cannot be discussed here. Suffice it to say that in the late nineteenth century, Cecil Rhodes and Joseph Chamberlain were proud to be ‘Imperialists’. After the publication of Lenin’s pamphlet: ‘Imperialism the highest state of Capitalism’, nobody wanted to be identified as an ‘Imperialist’, and like ‘Fascist’, only one’s enemy was depicted as such. I intend to show that antisemitism went through a similar development, and that after the Holocaust nobody wants to be accused in public of antisemitism. Avoiding the modem term ‘antisemitism’ for pre-Christian classical antiquity is not a matter of principle, as I shall show below (p. 33 ff.), but I would prefer an English equivalent to the German term Judenhass.
