In variable degrees and in different ways, each one of them was great. Some dared to fight against popular opinion and to tread where no one had gone before. Others brought us new diagnostic and surgical techniques. Still others brought us new ideal upon which we have both acted and built. Without these people neurological surgery would not exist today. We owe them much. The difficulties under which they thought and worked are almost incomprehensible today. They left us not with a finished specialty but with a growing and developing one. It is now proposed to prepare another volume in which we will present those whom they taught and those who have succeeded them and built upon the sturdy structure they provided. Even with these more modern neurosurgical giants we have by no means reached the end of the road. There is still much to be done. We continue to need pioneers. These, too, must be thoughtful, imaginative men and women who will push out the frontiers of neurological surgery. We can and we will learn how to cure gliomas of the brain and intracranial vasospasm. We will become able to prevent and cure the paralysis resulting from injury to the spinal cord and the severe disabilities that result from craniocerebral injury. We will prevent the development of severe congenital malformations of the spinal cord. There are numerous other ways in which we shall continue to make progress.
