The first of these, written by a clinician responsible for the provision of prosthetics in a large regional area of the UK, will present a range of ethical and medico-legal issues for rehabilitation professionals in the supply and withdrawal of prostheses and assistive technology for people with limb loss or deformity. The second chapter, provided by a prosthetician and prosthetic engineers, will present the development of an innovative computerized technique for monitoring upper limb prosthesis activity. The final chapter in this section is written by an anthropologist, himself an amputee, presenting ethnographic work on how prostheticians and their clients actually ""go about"" providing artificial limbs. Together these chapters explicate the processes involved in prostheticians’ work with clients in a manner which will be of interest to students and professionals from a range of disciplines. Section 2 (""The Experience and Meaning of Prosthesis Use"") focuses on the experiences and meanings of prosthesis users themselves. The first of three chapters, written by members of the Dublin Psychoprothetics Group, explores the ways in which people adapt and cope with limb loss and using a prosthesis, the potential for positive adjustment and strengths emerging from the experience, pain, affective distress, issues around identity, body image, and the construction of self and quality of life. It also considers the importance of these issues for health service providers across the multidisciplinary team who work with people with limb loss. The second chapter provides a reflective critique of the themes in the book, namely, the process of prosthetic rehabilitation, by way of a reprint of Gelya Frank’s classic paper ""Beyond Stigma: Visibility and Self-Empowerment of Persons with Congenital Limb Deficiencies,"" along with a new commentary from the author herself. This chapter focuses on the experiences of people born with congenital limb deficiencies who have chosen not to use prosthetics as part of a strategy to counteract the stigmatization of disability and bodily difference. The views of these participants provide challenges to a range of professionals involved in the rehabilitation of people with amputations and limb deficiencies. The final chapter of this section presents a range of themes in the experiences of people who choose to use prosthetics following amputation or limb absence, including the embodied used of prosthesis and the integration of these into the identity of the persons concerned. The final section (postoperative pain and new treatments of phantom limb pain) focuses on phantom limb pain and emerging therapies for this phenomenon. The first of four chapters presents a clinician’s account of post amputation pain, stressing how this is temporally dependent, varying at different stages of the perioperative/postoperative period, with possibly more than one pain being present at any time. In considering the complex amalgam of pain contributors the author argues for a full biopsychosocial assessment to be made with attention and treatment given to any associated mood disorder, disorder of cognition or behavioral maladaptations. ""Gladiator Dogs"" contains an updated perspective of each of the fighting dogs, among them the American Bulldog. The book is not intended to be an ""everything you always wanted to know about these breeds"" kind of book. Each section is an acute overview of its subject, covering the time span between books and bringing the reader up to speed with newly discovered information and answers. The book contains a section of the questions most frequently asked, and Dr. Semencic`s answers. The photographs and accompanying captions are very well suited to the book and give several different perspectives of each breed. The composition is Dr. Semencic`s usual style of comprehensive and informative writing with a flair for the personal mien. All in all, the Watchkeeper Critic found ""Gladiator Dogs"" to be worthy of more than a second glance. It is a meritorious and substantive addition to the American Bulldogger`s library. In my opinion, one can offer nothing but a five star review to any book that is based solely upon totally independent research and which offers valid information that has never been offered in writing anywhere before. This is especially true when the subject in question is one of the oldest and most commonly discussed subjects in the world. For the past two decades, Semencic has been this area of interest`s greatest pioneer. If he has, in fact, made the decision to write no more books about dogs (as he suggests is the case in Gladiator Dogs), dog fanciers world-wide have certainly lost something important. It`s a pity that any of us are so blind (read ""jealous"") as to be unable to see what he has contributed. ""Gladiator Dogs"" is written in typical Semencic-style, as if he were ""talking dogs"" with an old friend. Like his other books, information is offered about breeds that have never, ever been mentioned in print. All of the information is first hand. It is based upon what he has learned from his worldwide network of friends and acquaintances who are involved with these rare breeds and upon the extensive travel he has done in order to come to know these breeds himself. There are a few editorial errors in this book but it is plain to see that these errors are the fault of the publisher and not the author. All that I could find are restricted to photo captions. Maybe this author could have use another publisher? Also, I am a little bothered by the fact that I bought this book when it was first released at $60.00. Now it is available for much less. But this isn`t Semencic`s doing either. All in all, if you are seriously interested in the gladiator breeds of dogs, there is no question that you should own this book. If you own none of his books, buy them all and keep them in good shape because they will be collector`s items one day, should they ever go out of print. His first book, ""Fighting Dogs"", in its original cover is a collectors item already. Congratulations ""Doc"". Das Braune Haus der Kunst. Hitler und der ""Sonderauftrag Linz"": Visionen, Verbrechen, Verluste [Gebundene Ausgabe] von Hanns Christian Löhr (Autor) Seit 1938 verfolgte Adolf Hitler den Plan, in Linz an der Donau ein Museum zu gründen. Die Sammlung sollte internationalen Rang haben. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, ließ er in Deutschland, Österreich, Frankreich, Italien und den Niederlanden mehrere tausend Kunstwerke erwerben. Über dieses Vorhaben liegen nun bislang unberücksichtigte Quellen vor. Sie erlauben zum ersten Mal einen Überblick auf das Thema, der durch weitere Funde kaum noch ergänzt werden kann. Bei den ausgewerteten Unterlagen handelt es sich um circa 3900 Karteikarten über Gemälde, Zeichnungen und Skulpturen, die vor dem 8. Mai 1945 im Münchener ""Führerbau"" lagerten. Zu diesen Karteikarten gehören ebenfalls 3900 originale Positiv-Abzüge von Kunstgegenständen, die für Hitler erworben wurden. Diese Dokumente waren bisher nur den Mitarbeitern der Berliner Finanzverwaltung und wenigen Fachleuten bekannt. Auf der Basis dieses umfassenden originalen Bestandsverzeichnisses der ""Sammlung des Sonderauftrages Linz"" liefert der Berliner Historiker Hanns Christian Löhr eine systematische Untersuchung über den Aufbau der Linzer Sammlung und die Herkunft der geraubten und gekauften Kunstwerke. Im Verbund mit den jetzt zugänglichen Karteisystemen und dem ergänzenden Fotomaterial wird eine gegenüber dem bisherigen Forschungsstand präzisere Bestimmung der Gemälde möglich. Dazu kann der Autor die Art ihrer Beschaffung und die daran Mitwirkenden zeigen. Dabei geraten Kunsthändler aus dem In- und Ausland, die als Helfer und Hehler Hitler unterstützten, in den Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Zudem werfen die Umstände um das ""Führermuseum Linz"" entscheidende Schlaglichter auf die Rolle von Kunst als Propagandainstrument in der NS-Zeit. Der Autor untersucht die Sammlung des ""Sonderauftrags Linz"", die ""Alte Kunst"" vor allem aus dem 19. Jahrhundert enthielt, erstmals systematisch in ihrer propagandistischen Wirkung. Er weist nach, dass sie dazu dienen sollte, für die politischen und rassischen Ziele des ""Dritten Reiches"" zu werben. Ein Verlust-Katalog von 191 Bildern der Linzer Sammlung, die seit 1945 verschollen sind, ergänzt die Untersuchung. Einige der verlorenen Bilder sind inzwischen wieder in öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen aufgetaucht. Mit der Dokumentation entsteht ein Instrumentarium, das zur Identifizierung von Raubkunst dienen kann. Die Arbeit richtet sich an Wissenschaftler, aber auch an Kunsthändler und andere Interessierte, die sich davor schützen wollen, gestohlene Kunst zu erwerben. Über dieses Vorhaben liegen nun bislang unberücksichtigte Quellen vor. Sie erlauben zum ersten Mal einen Überblick auf das Thema, der durch weitere Funde kaum noch ergänzt werden kann. Bei den ausgewerteten Unterlagen handelt es sich um circa 3900 Karteikarten über Gemälde, Zeichnungen und Skulpturen, die vor dem 8. Mai 1945 im Münchener ""Führerbau"" lagerten. Zu diesen Karteikarten gehören ebenfalls 3900 originale Positiv-Abzüge von Kunstgegenständen, die für Hitler erworben wurden. Diese Dokumente waren bisher nur den Mitarbeitern der Berliner Finanzverwaltung und wenigen Fachleuten bekannt. Auf der Basis dieses umfassenden originalen Bestandsverzeichnisses der ""Sammlung des Sonderauftrages Linz"" liefert der Berliner Historiker Hanns Christian Löhr eine systematische Untersuchung über den Aufbau der Linzer Sammlung und die Herkunft der geraubten und gekauften Kunstwerke. Im Verbund mit den jetzt zugänglichen Karteisystemen und dem ergänzenden Fotomaterial wird eine gegenüber dem bisherigen Forschungsstand präzisere Bestimmung der Gemälde möglich. Dazu kann der Autor die Art ihrer Beschaffung und die daran Mitwirkenden zeigen. Dabei geraten Kunsthändler aus dem In- und Ausland, die als Helfer und Hehler Hitler unterstützten, in den Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Zudem werfen die Umstände um das ""Führermuseum Linz"" entscheidende Schlaglichter auf die Rolle von Kunst als Propagandainstrument in der NS-Zeit. Der Autor untersucht die Sammlung des ""Sonderauftrags Linz"", die ""Alte Kunst"" vor allem aus dem 19. Jahrhundert enthielt, erstmals systematisch in ihrer propagandistischen Wirkung. Er weist nach, dass sie dazu dienen sollte, für die politischen und rassischen Ziele des ""Dritten Reiches"" zu werben. Ein Verlust-Katalog von 191 Bildern der Linzer Sammlung, die seit 1945 verschollen sind, ergänzt die Untersuchung. Einige der verlorenen Bilder sind inzwischen wieder in öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen aufgetaucht. Mit der Dokumentation entsteht ein Instrumentarium, das zur Identifizierung von Raubkunst dienen kann.
