The photographer Richard Avedon had, in his own words, `a passion for high-definition performance and a faith in the religion of perpetual acceleration`. Or, as critic John Lahr says of Avedon, `He was ravished by the articulate energy of great performers`. The preeminent stars and artists of the performing arts from the second half of the twentieth century offered Avedon their greatest gifts - and, sometimes, their inner lives.More than two hundred of them are portrayed in ""Performance"", many in photographs that have rarely or never been seen before. Of course, the great stars light the way: Hepburn and Chaplin, Monroe and Garland, Brando and Sinatra. But here too are the actors and comedians, pop stars and divas, musicians and dancers, artists in all mediums with public lives that were and are essentially performances. The celebrated author and critic John Lahr offers an elegant assessment of Avedon`s achievement. Four supremely talented artists from the performing arts - Mike Nichols, Andre Gregory, Mitsuko Uchida and Twyla Tharp - contribute lively and moving memoirs about their collaborations with Avedon. Finally, ""Performance"" is a remarkable achievement in book-making, from its innovative portfolio binding to the superb quality of its printing. Richard Avedon was one of the most influential photographers of the second half of the twentieth century. His portrait work comprises an authoritative record of his era. Avedon re-definied the fashion photograph. In 1992 he was named the first staff photographer in the history of The New Yorker. John Lahr is Senior Drama Critic of the New Yorker. Mike Nichols in an award-winning stage and film director, writer and producer. Andre Gregory is an American director and actor. Mitsuko Uchida is a highly acclaimed classical pianist. Twyla Tharp is an award-winning dancer and choreographer

Financial market history is a guide to understanding the future. Looking at the four occasions when US equities were particularly cheap - 1921, 1932, 1949 and 1982 - Russell Napier sets out to answer these questions by analysing every article in the ""Wall Street Journal"" from either side of the market bottom. In the 70,000 articles he examines, one begins to understand the features which indicate that a great buying opportunity is emerging. By looking at how markets really did work in these bear-market bottoms, rather than theorising how they should work, Napier offers investors a financial field guide to making the best financial provisions for the future. This new edition includes an updated prologue from the author. This new edition includes a brand new preface from the author. This is a good time to look at the financial bear. How does one spot the bottom of a bear market? What bring a bear to its end? There are few more important questions to be answered in modern finance. Financial market history is a guide to understanding the future. Looking at the four occasions when US equities were particularly cheap - 1921, 1932, 1949 and 1982, Russell Napier sets to answer these questions by analysing every article in the ""Wall Street Journal"" of either side of the market bottom. In these 70, 000 articles he examines, one begins to understand the features which indicate that a great buying opportunity is emerging. By looking at how markets really did work in these bear-market bottoms, rather than theorising how they should work, Napier offers investors a financial field guide to making the best financial provisions for the future. Russell Napier is a consultant with CLSA writing on issues affecting global equity markets. After studying law, he began his investment career at Baillie Gifford in Edinburgh managing funds in the Japanese, then the US and finally the Asian markets. Moving to London he was responsible for managing Asian portfolios. In 1995 he relocated to Hong Kong to become the Asian strategist for CLSA. He occupied that position full time until 1999 during which he was ranked number one for Asian strategy in all major industry polls. Since 1999, apart from fulfilling a consultancy roll for CLSA, Russell has created and established a new course called A Practical History of the Financial Markets which is taught through Edinburgh Business School. Another classic of this type is ""Manias Panics and Crashes"". This one is specific to the four big Bear markets of the last century. The author goes through each one as an example. He identifies each stage and has clippings from the markets on peoples sentiment. Shows pricings and looks for what was the best indicator at the bottom. There is no hype, predictions, or false systems in this book. It`s more presenting information and presenting patterns that occured. All the bears follow similar patterns where there is froth, leverage, money sloshing around and everything is priced up a bit. Then some triggering event happens and people either re-evaluate or are forced to change their minds on valuations. Prices drop until they hit a bottom. Things uptrend for a while even though the news is still bad The author goes over each bear and how it`s the same and how it`s different. Until reading this book, I did not understand or even think about using commodity prices as a leading indicator. Did not know that the stock market turned up before the economy did. Did not know that the great depression involved multiple stages, an international banking crisis, and a late move to gold. After reading this book, now when I see someone on the TV saying that ""They`ve never seen anything like this before"" about LTCM, Bear Strerns, or the price of oil or gold I have a better perspective. When someone tells me that ""the market has definately found bottom"" or ""Can`t go down from here"" I kind of chuckle now. I do know that when people say ""This is a great time to buy stocks"" they often don`t know what they`re talking about, or they`re making it up. If the credit crisis worsens this year, this summer or the next may be the best buying opportunity in the US stock market in the last 30 years. Hopefully what I`ve read will be some help. Every downturn is different, and Banks/Fed/Investors act differently each time based on past exp and history It may be that we`ve already hit bottom It may be that nothing in this book will call the next bottom Only time will tell. Many won`t read this book because it doesn`t say ""Get RICH QUICK"" on the front LOL Anatomy of the Bear Lessons from Wall Street`s Four Great Bottoms Russell Napier

The English Manor Houses: From the Archives of ""Country Life"" [Englisch] von Jeremy Musson (Autor) An English Manor House represents an architectural ideal. Elizabeth Taylor: My Love Affair with Jewelry (Jewelry Crafts) [Englisch] [Gebundene Ausgabe] von Elizabeth Taylor (Autor) ""Here, in my own words and as I remember them, are my cherished stories about a lifetime of fun and love and laughterI`ve never thought of my jewelry as trophies. I`m here to take care of it and to love it, for we are only temporary custodians of beauty."" Elizabeth Taylor She has mesmerized movie audiences since her debut in National Velvet at the age of twelve, dazzled both men and women with her luminous beauty and iconic presence, displayed shrewd business acumen by creating a line of fragrances with unparalleled success, and her AIDS activism has been a call to arms for people around the world. She is Hollywood`s greatest living star and a living legendElizabeth Taylor. One of her greatest passions is jewelry, and over the years she has amassed one of the world`s foremost collections. By the time she was in her thirties, Elizabeth Taylor already owned an outstanding set of Burmese rubies and diamonds from Cartier, a fantastic emerald and diamond suite from Bulgari, and the 33.19-carat Krupp diamond, a gift from Richard Burton. That ring was later eclipsed by a subsequent gift from Burton, when he bought a staggering 69.42-carat pear-shaped diamond. Newly named the Taylor-Burton Diamond, it catapulted Elizabeth Taylor into that rarefied pantheon of great jewelry collectors. In this revealing book, Elizabeth Taylor offers a personal guided tour of her collection. She takes us into her confidence, sharing personal anecdotes, witty asides, and intimate reminiscences about her life, her loves, and her collection. Whether talking about the famous La Peregrina pearl, which was briefly abducted by a household pet, or chatting about a childhood gift to her mother, Elizabeth Taylor shows herself to be the most seductive of storytellersdirect, irreverent, and charming. Complementing the stories are 125 stunning new photographs of her most remarkable pieces, specially commissioned for this book, and more than 150 rarely seen images (many from Elizabeth Taylor`s personal collection) of the star wearing her jewelry over the course of almost sixty years. We see her as a young ingenue of fifteen wearing what would be the first of many charm bracelets, and again, equally dazzling, as a mature woman, wearing the famous Duchess of Windsor diamond brooch, which she purchased to benefit AIDS research. Elizabeth TaylorMy Love Affair with Jewelry marks the first time this beautiful jewelry will be seen together as a collection. Lavishly produced and illustrated, the book has an introduction by the world-renowned authority on jewelry, François Curiel, of Christie`s. It is for those who are enchanted by this most incandescent and enduring star, for those who cherish and dream of jewelry, and most importantly, for those who believe in the true meaning of love. This book is a fabulous display of unbelievable glamour, assembled over a lifetime, by one of the most extraordinary women in the world. Profiles the film star`s collection of jewelry, providing descriptions of her most noteworthy pieces and describing their representation of particular relationships and events in her life. Über den AutorDame Elizabeth Taylor is the star of more than fifty-five films, among them National Velvet, A Place in the Sun, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Butterfield 8, Who`s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and Cleopatra. The burned investor could find no better starting place than this superb book by four New York City value investors, all descended from the master of value investing, Benjamin Graham They have written one of the most intelligent overviews of investing I`ve ever read, combining analytical rigor with intuitive description."" (DAVID A. SYLVESTER, Published Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, in the San Jose Mercury News) ""Greenwald is an excellent guide on this subject"" From the ""guru to Wall Street`s gurus"" comes the fundamental techniques of value investing and their applications Bruce Greenwald is one of the leading authorities on value investing. Some of the savviest people on Wall Street have taken his Columbia Business School executive education course on the subject. Now this dynamic and popular teacher, with some colleagues, reveals the fundamental principles of value investing, the one investment technique that has proven itself consistently over time. After covering general techniques of value investing, the book proceeds to illustrate their applications through profiles of Warren Buffett, Michael Price, Mario Gabellio, and other successful value investors. A number of case studies highlight the techniques in practice. Bruce C. N. Greenwald (New York, NY) is the Robert Heilbrunn Professor of Finance and Asset Management at Columbia University. Judd Kahn, PhD (New York, NY), is a member of Morningside Value Investors. Paul D. Sonkin (New York, NY) is the investment manager of the Hummingbird Value Fund. Michael van Biema (New York, NY) is an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University. Value investing is so unpopular now, that many do not know about this highly successful form of investing as practiced by its greatest masters. Value Investing helps to overcome that ignorance among the newest generation of investors. That is good and timely, because we seem to be entering a time when value investors often make their greatest coups. If you believe that the stock market is totally efficient (current prices accurately discount everything that is or could be known about the company to accurately price a company`s securities), you will think this book is irrelevant. If you think that stock prices normally over or under value a company`s worth, you will find this book fascinating. If you want to have a decent chance of learning how to outperform indexed mutual funds, this book is one of a handful that can help you. The methods and investors outlined in this book have successfully beaten the market averages for decades. So whether you try to do apply the concepts for yourself, or have your money invested by one of these top value investment managers, value investing is a discipline that can help you achieve superior investing results. In some of the many back tests run in recent years to test for market efficiency concerning stock prices, simply buying stocks with low price/earnings and price/book ratios proved to outperform the market averages. More thoughtful stock-picking can do even better. But the ideas in this book are far more important than that. Value Investing shows the many ways that situations where securities are underpriced can be found and exploited. The masters of this approach do a lot of fundamental homework, and look carefully from several different perspectives. Many people identify value investing with Benjamin Graham and the early Warren Buffett. This book expands that perspective by also profiling Mario Gabelli, Glenn Greenberg, Robert Heilbrunn, Seth Klarman, Michael Price, Water and Edwin Schloss, and Paul Sonkin. You will find out about how they were educated, the value disciplines they have used, their long-term track records, and how they differ from one another. You should realize that value investing is above-all an intellectual and cross-checking exercise (a bit like chess), far removed from emotion of day-trading and the thrills of following trading momentum. You need to be patient. Years can pass without any good opportunities arising. You will often sell stocks far before their ultimate peak. So you will have to think about how well the psychology of the careful hunter with one bullet in your rifle matches the way you like to do things. One of the hardest things to accommodate is that your results will look worst when everyone else is picking up easy money, mindlessly, by running with the herd of rampaging bulls. As helpful as this book is, Value Investing has a number of weaknesses. First, new investors will probably get a little lost in the discussions. The authors usually begin at a level of understanding that people who have attended business school have. Second, you will find it hard to run down more details on concepts you don`t quite get. Third, you will get a flavor of what each investor has done . . . but not the full detail. So, think of this as a wine tasting. If you find some styles you like, plan to do more reading and studying. Fourth, if you were only taught the investing creed according to efficient markets, you will probably wonder what all the fuss is about. The book could have used more references to the new research that challenges the assumptions built into CAPM (the Capital Asset Pricing Model). In your personal life, do you ever find it rewarding to get a great bargain on something of value that you care about? If so, value investing may be for you. The sense of satisfaction is similar, and the financial rewards can be greater. Be cautious as you apply any investing method to outperform the market averages. Limit the size of your potential losses until you have fully developed your skill. Look carefully, think . . . and be skeptical! There are many people trying to make the future seem rosier than it will be. Value Investing From Graham to Buffett and Beyond Wiley Finance

Schlagworte: Aktien Rohstoffe Fonds Derivate Zertifikate Börse Trader Trading Wall Street investment finance outperformance investors mutual funds management fees This book is the clearest, most insightful work on how the great investors of the last 50 years built their enviable track records. Seeing what people actually do is often more helpful than running computer simulations on what would have outperformed the past market. Since the future will probably be different, such exercises often have little benefit, and may hold the potential for harm. After all, people are tempted to do the wrong things, just as you may be sometimes. This book gives you an insight into what the great investors paid attention to, what questions they asked themselves, and others, and how they behaved. You will find that successful investing has been a lot different than it sounds on CNBC. Generally, those who are eager to talk about what they do have little of value to share. The exception may be managers of large mutual funds who want to attract your funds to theirs (for a piece of the action, in the form of a management fee). Profiles of nine money-game winners - and more entertaining, all told, than instructive. Only one of the lot - commodities plunger Stanley Kroll, who cashed in his chips at age 40 and went to live in Europe - is not identified with equities. The others made their marks in the stock market, concentrating in one way or another on enduring values rather than interim fads; but that propensity aside, about all they have in common is a wealth of personal eccentricities. Robert Wilson, currently the financial community`s most visible short seller, practices yoga, reads the classics, and prefers synthesis to analysis. The late Benjamin Graham - a pioneer in fundamental securities analysis who was characterized by one of three ex-wives as being ""humane but not human"" - based his decisions almost wholly on balance-sheet data and other quantitative yardsticks. But Boston`s buccaneering Paul Cabot - who quintupled Harvard`s endowment to better than $1 billion over a 17-year span - is willing to run above-average risks if his intuition tells him he can attain superior appreciation rewards. On the other hand, Phillip Fisher - a San Franciscan who eats soup for breakfast and lunches at his desk on French bread and peanut butter - has fared well with the shares of electronics concerns based in nearby ""Silicon Valley."" The cast of characters also includes: Warren Buffet, a Nebraskan with a sharp eye for bargain-priced special situations; J. Rowe Price, an early advocate of growth issues who built a mutual-fund empire that bears his name; John ("". . . to everything there is a season. . ."") Templeton, a religion-minded money manager who pursues opportunities in offshore markets from a Nassau command post; and Lawrence Tisch, a corporate chieftain who has put more cash in Loews coffers through astute securities trading than he has by operating the company`s movie theaters, hotels, and various other properties. Train concedes there may be no single lesson to be learned from the disparate careers of these men except that discipline and dedication can pay off; but the engaging way he tells their stories and his acumen in evaluating their investment philosophies will commend the text to readers on Main Street as well as Wall Street.
