Das Buch ist ein wenig dick und schwer, so eignet es sich eher am Schreibtisch als im Freibad zu lesen - glücklicherweise gibt es zusätzlich die DVD, auf der das Buch in PDF drauf ist. Neuartig sind allerdings komplexitätstreibende Faktoren, z. B. verkürzte Produktlebenszyklen oder die hohe Geschwindigkeit des technologischen Wandels. Gestiegen ist aber auch der Anspruch, wie mit solchen Supply Chains und deren Risiken umgegangen wird. So soll das Supply-Chain-Controlling eine zielgerichtete Steuerung ganzer Lieferketten unterstützen. Es ist dieser umfassende Anspruch, der die besondere Problematik eines Supply-Chain-Management ausmacht, müssen doch zahlreiche Akteure und Maßnahmen über Unternehmensgrenzen hinweg koordiniert und erzielte Effizienzgewinne verteilt werden. Das Supply-Chain-Controlling hat deshalb in der jüngsten Vergangenheit einen erheblichen Bedeutungszuwachs erfahren. Dabei ist es gerade nicht das Ziel, nur die Wirtschaftlichkeit eines einzelnen Unternehmens zu optimieren, sondern es sollen insgesamt die Effizienz und Effektivität der gesamten Supply Chain gesteigert werden. Gefährdet wird die Wirtschaftlichkeit einer Lieferkette allerdings maßgeblich durch Supply-Chain-Risiken. Ein solches Risiko kann definiert werden als ein mit einer Auftretenswahrscheinlichkeit bewerteter Schaden, dessen Eintreten mehr als ein Unternehmen der Supply Chain betrifft und dessen Ursache zumindest im Umfeld einer Supply Chain liegt.
