Volume XIX. - Band 19 von 20 Bänden. - The Nineteenth Volume of Purchas His Pilgrimes Contayning English Plantations, Discoveries, Acts and Occurrents in Virginia and Summer Islands: English Discoveries and Plantations in New England, Newfoundland; with the Patent and Voyages to New Scotland, and Relations of the Fleets set forth by Queen Elizabeth against the Spaniards. - Dr. James Robert Wood (Trinity College Dublin) nennt das mehrbändige Werk “Hakluytus Posthumus or Purchas his pilgrimes” ein Kompendium der Reiseerzählungen, vor allem aus Elisabethanischer und Jakobinischer Zeit. Erstmals in vier Foliobänden erschien das Werk 1625. Der Autor der gesammelten Reiseerzählungen, Samuel Purchas (xxx-1626), war ordinierter Priester und arbeitete auf verschiedenen Posten für die Church of England. Zur gleichen Zeit vertiefte er sich in Reiseerzählungen von Kaufleuten, Seefahrern, Entdeckungsreisenden, Pilgern und Geistlichen in ferne Länder. Purchas selbst, so zitiert Wood ihn aus einem der Werke „has never been 200 miles from Thaxted in Essex where [he] was borne”. Den erweiterten Titel “Hakluytus Posthumus“ bezieht Purchas als eine Fortsetzung auf die (ebenfalls auf fremden Quellen basierenden) Reiseerzählungen des englischen Geographen Richard Hakyluyts (ca. 1552-1616), als dessen Assistent Purchas eine Weile tätig war und aus dessen Nachlass er wertvolle Dokumente für seine eigenen Bücher bekam. Neben den Reiseerzählungen galt Purchas Interesse der Handels- und Imperialpolitik Englands und er verfasste „Purchas his Pilgrims“ unter der Schirmherrschaft der „East India Company“, die ihrerseits Finanzen und Zugang zu Manuskripten zur Verfügung stellte. Abschließend Woods Urteil über „Purchas his Pilgrims“: „Purchas framing of the narratives provided an important articulation and ideological justification of England’s mercantile and imperial ambitions in the seventeenth century. The work is a central document for all researchers interested in England’s relations with the Near East.” (Essay by Dr. James Robert Wood, University College Dublin, Reading East). Und das kommt teuer. Das muss man sich mal vorstellen! Deutsche Manager machen sich selbst die Rendite kaputt. Da wundern einen vier Millionen Arbeitslose nicht mehr. Erfrischend ist der völlig theoriefreie Stil der Autoren, der vor Praxisbeispielen nur so strotzt. Die Tipps für richtiges Rechnen sind dabei so einfach, dass man sie praktisch aus dem Buch heraus umsetzen kann. Ist das nicht schön? Man muss nicht zusätzlich Klinken putzen oder Werbung machen, um mehr Umsatz zu machen. Man muss keine Leute entlassen, um Kosten zu sparen. Man muss nur richtig rechnen. Ich finde die Tipps fürs richtige Rechnen bares Geld wert. Ich habe nur eine Vermutung: Die Manager, die nicht rechnen können, können auch nicht lesen. Dass mehr Umsatz kein Segen ist, sondern ein Unternehmen ruinieren kann, wusste ich schon. Dass wir uns aber in vielen anderen Fragen ähnlich renditeschädigend verrechnen, wusste ich nicht. Warum sagen uns das die Controller, Berater und Wirtschaftsprofessoren nicht? Wenigstens hilft uns jetzt jemand, die Rechenfehler abzustellen. Und die sind so simpel, dass man nocht nicht mal ins Fachchinesisch abtauchen muss.
