Amino-Acid Homopolymers Occurring in Nature
Reihe: Microbiology Monographs 15
Springer-Verlag GmbH, Springer Berlin, Juli 2010
250 S. - Sprache: Englisch - 235x155x16 mm

ISBN: 3642124526
EAN: 9783642124525

Microorganisms are capable of producing a wide variety of biopolymers. Homopolymer peptides, which are made up of only a single type of amino acid, are far less ubiquitous. The only two amino-acid homopolymers known to occur in nature are presented in this volume. Poly-epsilon-L-lysine is a polycationic peptide and exhibits antimicrobial activity against a wide spectrum of microorganisms. It is both safe and biodegradable and is therefore used as a food preservative in several countries. In addition, there has been great interest in medical and other applications of poly-lysine and its derivatives. In contrast, poly-gamma-glutamic acid is an unusual anionic polypeptide. It is also water soluble, biodegradable, edible, non-toxic and non-immunogenic and can be chemically modified to introduce various drugs. These features are very useful for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. Poly-glutamic acid is also a highly attractive as a food ingredient.

Quantitative Methods in Proteomics
Reihe: Methods in Molecular Biology 893
Springer-Verlag GmbH, Humana Press, Juni 2012
539 S. - Sprache: Englisch - 98 schwarz-weiße und 11 farbige Abbildungen, 19 schwarz-weiße Tabellen - 261x186x35 mm Book

ISBN: 1617798843
EAN: 9781617798849

Protein modifications and changes made to them, as well as the quantities of expressed proteins, can define the various functional stages of the cell. Accordingly, perturbations can lead to various diseases and disorders. As a result, it has become paramount to be able to detect and monitor post-translational modifications and to measure the abundance of proteins within the cell with extreme sensitivity. While protein identification is an almost routine requirement nowadays, reliable techniques for quantifying unmodified proteins (including those that escape detection under standard conditions, such as protein isoforms and membrane proteins) is not routine. Quantitative Methods in Proteomics gives a detailed survey of topics and methods on the principles underlying modern protein analysis, from statistical issues when planning proteomics experiments, to gel-based and mass spectrometry-based applications. The quantification of post-translational modifications is also addressed, followed by the "hot" topics of software and data analysis, as well as various overview chapters which provide a comprehensive overview of existing methods in quantitative proteomics. Written in the successful Methods in Molecular Biology(TM) series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.   Authoritative and easily accessible, Quantitative Methods in Proteomics serves as a comprehensive and competent overview of the important and still growing field of quantitative proteomics.

Reihe: Parasitology Research Monographs 10
Springer-Verlag GmbH, Springer International Publishing, November 2018
354 S. - Sprache: Englisch - 50 schwarz-weiße Abbildungen, Bibliographie - 241x159x25 mm Book

ISBN: 3319940740
EAN: 9783319940748

This book gathers contributions by 39 international specialists on well-known but neglected mosquito-borne diseases. The authors highlight pathogens that are increasingly being spread worldwide by various mosquito species, a situation worsened further by migration and tourism. The book addresses significant agents of diseases like AIDS, dengue, Zika virus, malaria and even cancer, and the risk of transmission via mosquito-related vectors. In addition, it examines important means of preventing the outbreak of related diseases by using insecticides and/or repellents. A particular focus is on the unique and sophisticated mouthparts of bloodsucking species, which allow them to feed on blood in an undisturbed manner, and by means of which agents of disease can enter potential human and animal hosts. In brief, the book provides a broad range of information for a wide readership, including graduates, teachers and researchers in the fields of parasitology, virology, tropical medicine and microbiology, as well as practitioners and healthcare officials.

Cold-adapted Yeasts Biodiversity, Adaptation Strategies and Biotechnological Significance
Springer Berlin Heidelberg, Springer Berlin, Oktober 2013
2014 - 564 S. - Sprache: Englisch - 244x161x38 mm Book

ISBN: 3642396801
EAN: 9783642396809

Yeasts are a versatile group of eukaryotic microorganisms, exhibiting heterogeneous nutritional profiles and an extraordinary ability to survive in a wide range of natural and man-associated ecosystems, including cold habitats. Cold-adapted yeasts inhabit numerous low-temperature environments where they are subjected to seasonal or permanent cold conditions. Hence, they have evolved a number of adaptation strategies with regard to growth and reproduction, metabolic activities, survival and protection. Due to their distinctive ability to thrive successfully at low and even subzero temperatures, cold-adapted yeasts are increasingly attracting attention in basic science and industry for their enormous biotechnological potential. This book presents our current understanding of the diversity and ecology of cold-adapted yeasts in worldwide cold ecosystems, their adaptation strategies, and their biotechnological significance. Special emphasis is placed on the exploitation of cold-adapted yeasts as a source of cold-active enzymes and biopolymers, as well as their benefits for food microbiology, bioremediation and biocontrol. Further, aspects of food biodeterioration are considered.

Baici, Antonio
Kinetics of Enzyme-Modifier Interactions Theory and Diagnosis of Inhibition and Activation Mechanisms
Springer-Verlag KG, Springer-Verlag GmbH, Juli 2015
489 S. - Sprache: Englisch - 242x172x28 mm

ISBN: 3709114012
EAN: 9783709114018

The kinetic mechanisms by which enzymes interact with inhibitors and activators, collectively called modifiers, are scrutinized and ranked taxonomically into autonomous species in a way similar to that used in the biological classification of plants and animals. The systematization of the mechanisms is based on two fundamental characters: the allosteric linkage between substrate and modifier and the factor by which a modifier affects the catalytic constant of the enzyme. Combinations of the physically significant states of these two characters in an ancestor-descendant-like fashion reveal the existence of seventeen modes of interaction that cover the needs of total, partial and fine-tuning modulation of enzyme activity. These interactions comprise five linear and five hyperbolic inhibition mechanisms, five nonessential activation mechanisms and two hybrid species that manifest either hyperbolic inhibition or nonessential activation characteristics depending on substrate concentration. Five essential activation mechanisms, which are taxonomically independent of the mentioned basic species, complete the inventory of enzyme modifiers. Often masked under conventional umbrella terms or treated as anomalous cases, all seventeen basic inhibition and nonessential activation mechanisms are represented in the biochemical and pharmacological literature of this and the past century, either in the form of rapid or slow-onset reversible interactions, or as irreversible modification processes. The full potential of enzyme inhibitors and activators can only be appreciated after elucidating the details of their kinetic mechanisms of action exploring the entire range of physiologically significant reactant concentrations. This book highlights the wide spectrum of allosteric enzyme modification in physiological occurrences as well as in pharmacological and biotechnological applications that embrace simple and multiple enzyme-modifier interactions. The reader is guided in the journey through this still partly uncharted territory with the aid of mechanistically-oriented criteria aimed at showing the logical way towards the identification of a particular mechanism.

Proteins and Proteomics of Leishmania and Trypanosoma
Springer Netherlands, Springer Netherland, Dezember 2013
2014 - 392 S. - Sprache: Englisch - 244x40x40 mm Book

ISBN: 9400773048
EAN: 9789400773042

This book contains a collection of critical reviews on the expression of biologically functional proteins in Leishmania and Trypanosoma, which was written by renowned researchers on this field. Species belonging to these trypanosomatids' genera are etiological agents of leishmaniasis, Chagas' disease and sleeping sickness that are extremely debilitating human infection diseases, which remain a major health problem especially in countries from Latin America, Africa and Middle East. Substantiating the problem, the currently accepted drugs for these diseases are quiet unsatisfying due to their low efficacy and high toxicity. In order to solve these real problems, several research groups around the world have become involved in the study and identification of novel potential targets in the trypanosomatid cell. Since proteins are key macromolecules involved in crucial metabolic processes of all living cells, studies have focused on the expression of specific proteins produced by Leishmania and Trypanosoma by means of different biochemical, molecular and proteomic approaches in order to explore them as targets for understanding the parasite life cycle and developing new strategies against trypanosomiasis. With these proposals in mind, the book "Proteins and Proteomics of Leishmania and Trypanosoma" encompasses (i) an integrated view about the biochemistry of parasites belonging to the Leishmania and Trypanosoma genera; (ii) an updated review on the expression of biologically relevant proteins by human pathogenic trypanosomatids and their possible role in the interaction with host cells/molecules as well as a target for development of both alternative chemotherapies and vaccine; and (iii) several pictures, diagrams and tables that can be used to illustrate both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as well as scientific lectures, being a useful resource for students and researchers.
