In the developing countries iron deficiency is mostly due to under nourishment and infectious disease, often accompanied by deficiency of micronutrients. In the developed industrial communities, aspects of life style such as slimming diets, vegetarian and vegan groups, and intensive training may lead to iron deficiency in addition to straightforward iron lack in the diet. Above a certain degree of severity iron deficiency leads to a disorder of hematopoiesis that is defined as anemia. Iron deficiency anemia is the most important clinical manifestation of iron deficiency.
