Liebe nach dem Krieg. The theme of love in post-war German fiction.
Würzburg: Königshausen und Neumann, 1995. 163 S., broschiert. ISBN: 3826010183 (EAN: 9783826010187 / 978-3826010187)
Text engl. By investigating the multifarious ways love is treated as a theme by four decades of German writers, this book seeks to reveal not only a literary transposition regarding this theme, but a societal transformation as well. The thematic polarity is perhaps best gleaned by observing what love represents in the two works which mark the beginning and conclusion of this study. For Wolfgang Koeppen in Tauben im Gras. love among the ruins is a life saver, something ephemeral, precious as the only source of hope in an extremely inhospitable environment. In contrast, Martin Walrer‘s protagonist in Brandling experiences love as fiction, even mockery, played out as a literary charade in a society whose ruins are invisible because internal and wheie love is scarce, even as it is constantly being touted and marketed. Concession in spoken English : on the realisation of a discourse-pragmatic relation. Language in performance 28.
Tübingen : Narr, 2003. XVII, 327 S. + 1 CD-R broschiert. ISBN: 3823358227 (EAN: 9783823358220 / 978-3823358220)
Einband leicht berieben. - This book focuses On Loncession, one of the so-called adverbial relations, in English. Particular attention is drawn to its realisation and function in public spoken discourse. In contrast to earlier semasiological studies, it identifies the relation on the basis of three actions: claiming, acknowledging and countering. This approach uncovers that Concession is rather frequent in spoken language. It occurs in a variety of structural patterns and its discourse functions extend beyond face-saving. For the analysis the study successfully combines the advantages of the qualitative methods of Conversation Analysis with quantitative corpus research. This forces the analyst beyond the clear cases and draws attention to the specificity of the individual case while at the same time offering the opportunity of generalising the qualitative results. Rastier, François:
Meaning and textuality. Translated by Frank Collins and Paul Perron.
Toronto, Buffalo : University of Toronto Press, 1997. xvi, 281 p., broschiert.
Historically there has been a wide gulf between European and Anglo-American thought on the philosophy of language, in part because it is often difficult to find important European works in English translation. Meaning and Textuality represents key elements of the ground-breaking new theory on signs and discourse that has come out of Europe in the past few decades. Meaning and Textuality is an investigation into methods useful to the analysis of language and literature. Rastier seeks ways to better understand signs, with emphasis on their relation to action and culture. He proposes a theoretical framework for the semantic description and typology of texts. Towards this end he establishes a critical debate among various streams of research before arriving at a synthesis of literary semiotics, thematics, and linguistic semantics. The author sees this synthesis as a means by which to reconcile the rigour of linguistic analysis with the complexity of literary interpretation. In the later portion of the book he tests his propositions in a series of detailed investigations of French literary texts by Zola, Maupassant, Mallarme, Apollinaire, and Jodelle. Each study examines a new problem such as narrative ambiguity or referential impression. Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst aber ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar.

Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - The aim of the present study is to show how the complexity of linguistic structures relates to the economy of elements and principles in the organization of language and to illustrate what role this relation plays in language development. The focus of the investigation is placed on the principles determining the phonetic component of lexical entries. It will be shown that one of the underlying forces of the phonetic component is the minimization of articulatory effort, which manifests itself in the optimization of the segmental and the prosodie level. As the study reveals the minimization of one level is possible to a certain extent since it is mostly connected with the increasing complexity of another level. ISBN 3050035196

Angiography. 2 vol.
Boston: Little, Brown, 1961. xvi, 807 p.
The field of angiography has developed in fitful, sporadic fashion over a period of four decades. The definition of inaccessibility, as applied to blood vessels, has been sharply modified during this period; indeed, on occasion the study of the vascular system in vivo has been characterized by an excess of access. There are now very few blood vessels which have resisted the assault of a probing needle, and therefore few regional vascular beds which have not received at least casual radiologic attention. The burgeoning field of vascular radiology has been nourished by an intense search for new avenues with which to enter and explore the interior of man. Primarily a mirror of normal and abnormal anatomy, angiography has had far too limited an application to basic physiologic study. The dispersion of information on this subject in widely scattered sources accounts at least partially for its failure to become a useful partner of physiology and pharmacology on a larger scale. Language, sign, and gender in Beowulf.
Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, 1990. xxvi, 137 p. Original cloth.
Vom Vorbesitzer mit Mängelstrich auf Fußschnitt erworben. - When I first began to study Old English poetry, I found it difficult to connect this kind of poetry with any other. It opened up a strange new territory, novel and intriguing despite (or perhaps because of) its formality, curious and somehow bizarre despite the hours of mundane paradigm and vocabulary learning that it rigorously demanded. I was inclined to agree with Thomas Shippey who claims that this poetry is different "in kind" from other types, although my sense of just how it was different in kind was articulated most often by default. The problem was, and is, that Old English poetry finds no space to occupy within the confines of accepted, agreed upon, or already delineated, literary borders. Its rhythms and sounds, its form and content do not respond to ready-made interpretive strategies; it does not "keep the bargain of modern poetry—that nothing vital will be left out and nothing unnecessary put in". It demands instead a renegotiation of any such bargain, a made-to-order interpretive strategy, or variety of strategies, that embrace and revalue its difference.

The more recent cultural turn in the humanities has been accompanied by an increasing interest in cultural and collective memory; it is within this context that the relation between literature, literary history and cultural memory deserves special attention. The present collection tackles the phenomenon from many angles, focusing on a wide variety of aspects, including intertextual mnemonics, genres as repositories of memory, the canon and literary history, and theoretical approaches to the study of literary and cultural memory. Specific topics covered include: encodings of the folktale in literature; Hemingway‘s style in American culture; French, German and English literary historiography and national consciousness; retrospection in modern British poetry and country-house fiction; the ‘wild thinking‘ of visionary poets as counter-memory; Richard III, Elizabeth I and processes of memorialization past and present; the ethical and aesthetic implications of cultural memory; and much more.
