NICHOLSON, Sir William Newzam Prior (1872 - 1949 und poet) illustrator). - William Ernest HENLEY (1849 - 1903:
New York: R.H. Russell, 1898. Large quarto. (13 x 10 3/4 inches). 1p publisher's advertisement at end. 12 plates printed in colours, from original woodcuts by William Nicholson. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards, the upper cover blocked with a design in red and black after Nicholson, the lower cover blocked with a the publisher's mark (light soiling and scuffing to extremities). A fine copy fo the first American edition of Nicholson and Henley's important and popular work. William Nicholson, with his brother-in-law James Pryde, produced posters that were a revelation to late 19th-century London. Nicholson went on to adapt his dramatic woodblock style to book illustration, publishing a series of highly successful works (the best known being An Alphabet; London Types; An Almanac of Twelve Sports) before turning to painting full-time with the encouragement of J.McN. Whistler. In the present work, in a striking series of images, Nicholson deftly captures the individual character of fin-de-siecle London 'types.' His selection starts with the bus driver on the cover, and continues inside with the guardsman, the hawker, the beef-eater, the sandwich-man, the coster, the lady, the bluecoat boy, the policeman, the news-boy, the drum-major, the flower girl and the, barmaid. A contemporary New York reviewer was enthusiastic: 'William Nicholson, whom Whistler has pronounced the greatest English artist since Hogarth, will follow up The Alphabet, his fabulous success of last year, with a volume of London Types. His drawing is full of character and has been most successfully reproduced. "A good deal of the effect," says The Critic, "is due to the modest scale of the colors employed. As in the earliest Italian and German attempts in color printing, the modelling and local color are indicated with a few tones of brown and occasional touches of one or two brighter colors. But very few old prints can compare with these for pictorial effect. Mr. Nicholson has learned something of the Japanese, also; and while his treatment is in general simpler than that of his European predecessors, he frequently uses delicate gradations which they did not attempt. His sense of the value of rich blacks in representing masses of deep shadow or of dark local color is extraordinary." His bold and characteristic style is at its best in London Types, of which there is to be a Popular Edition on cartridge paper bound in boards, a Library Edition bound in cloth [on Japanese vellum], and an edition de luxe with hand-colored plates. " (The Literary News [New York: 1898], vol. XIX, p.304). The three editions were published by Russell at $1.50; $3.75 and $45. It is interesting to note that Henley, little known in America at the time, was ignored by the reviewer. A literary editor and poet of note, his best known poem is now 'Invictus': an inspiration to Nelson Mandela on Robben Island and the origin of Clint Eastwood's recent film of the same name.
