More particularly, Mervyn Susser has combed the literature for available data on existing community practice in treatment of mental disorders outside the hospital; he has then examined these data from the perspectives both of epi-demiological research and social-science theory. And he draws upon his own pioneering work in England to add a further, comparative dimension to this examination. Dr. Susser uses an epidemiological approach to analyze the distribution of mental health, sickness, and disease in social collectivities and the causes of these distributions. He then turns to social-science theory to interpret the significance of the distributions; to study behavior related to health and sickness; and to analyze the structure and function of health and medical organizations. The analysis falls naturally into four main parts. The first deals with the history and objectives of community care of mental disorder and provides a concise survey of available fact, interpretation, and hypothesis about the social forces that may influence prognosis. The second part deals with prospects for prevention of socially caused illness; the third deals with operating problems, evaluation, measurement, and coordination of treatment services. The final part establishes a useful paradigm of rational health and medical care.
