Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - The British Museum Expedition to Middle Egypt worked for ten seasons at el-Ashmunein, excavating and surveying the city mound of Hermopolis Magna, the metropolis of the Nome of the Hare. Already immensely old by the time the Romans came, the city reached its greatest extent during their rule, falling into slow decline from about the seventh century AD. Throughout its history, however, stretching back from early Pharaonic times, the demolition and destruction of superseded and unwanted buildings and their replacement was a continuing process, as has been shown by Jeffrey Spencer, the Director of the excavations, in volumes I to III and by Donald Bailey in volume IV of this series. Rubbish containing broken pottery was constantly dumped, turned over and redistributed around the city, and as the Arab-period city shrank southwards huge areas were abandoned. By the twelfth century the inhabited area was smaller than the present-day town of el-Ashmunein. Ongoing stone removal, both for new construction and to burn for lime, has destroyed most earlier public buildings. From at least as early as the late eighteenth century until about the 1930s, enormous amounts of sebakh, the nitrogen-rich remains of domestic habitation, have been extracted to supply a saltpetre factory and for fertiliser. Because of this, most houses of the late Roman period and the first several centuries of Arab rule have gone, but not the pottery they contained. It is through the remaining debris that the archaeological trenches have been cut, most of them in the huge expanse taken up by the main Temple of Thoth, which dates from the New Kingdom. These trenches and open areas have produced the bulk of the pottery described and illustrated here. Most of the pottery dates from between the fifth and tenth century AD, covering the late Roman, Umayyad and Abbasid periods. Imported finewares came in some quantity from Tunisia, but little is later than the end of the sixth century. There is a very extensive series of locally made red-slip wares, and bulking equally large are those from the Aswan kilns nearly 600 km upriver, some of the vessel shapes continuing well into the eighth century. Domestic pottery made in the vicinity of the city was found in great quantity, including fine-quality cooking-pots and casseroles, bread-baking vessels, flagons and bowls of many shapes, often with painted decoration, and a variety of water-lifting pots. Vitreous-glazed wares, not seen in Egypt since the early centuries of Roman rule, again began to be made during the eighth century. Imports of oil from the Levant and Cyprus and of wine from the Gaza area came in amphorae made in those localities, and the very prosperous fifth and sixth centuries are reflected in the huge number of Egyptian wine-jars found.
