PRIVATE VIEWS: spaces and gender in contemporary art from britain and estonia offers a compelling insight into contemporary art, gender and difference in the shifting cultural landscapes of Europe. Richly illustrated, it expands on issues raised by the recent British-Estonian show Private Views in Tallinn and explores the meanings held by tradition and technology, feminism and postfeminism, national discourses and the market, both locally and globally. In the specially commissioned chapters for this volume, UK-based and Estonian writers offer a variety of approaches to aspects of contemporary art while arguments are drawn from art history, geography, social history and cultural studies. A timely contribution to current debates about the production and reception of new art, Private Views represents a dynamic perspective which recognises the different challenges facing women in these societies, whilst acknowledging the possibility of interaction across cultures. In the spring season of the year 1996-97 , the Tel Aviv Museum of Art will hold a number of Israeli and international exhibitions dealing with the contemporary artist‘s need to follow and to attach himself to the "visible" in order to make use of it as a central component in his work. The act of disengaging the object from its place and its natural context, and then positing it directly and realistically as raw material that may be controlled by the artist, has always required a system of art and aesthetics which could define, each time anew, the complicated connection between the concrete reality and the artistic reality. The return to "the painterly" which came in the wake of the crisis in the minimalist and conceptual movements in the early eighties, brought with it a renewed appreciation of the endeavors of artists to reconstruct the "real reality" into a "virtual reality", as this is embodied in contemporary painting and sculpture. The "Virtual Reality" exhibition deals with these new trends in contemporary Israeli art. When Renee Baert approached us with her initial proposal for an exhibition at The Power Plant, we were intrigued by her curatorial approach and thesis. We felt that she had carved out an interesting area for exploration which held the potential for a thought-provoking exhibition. Over the past many months, she has pursued her research and investigations and has honed a tight and coherent selection of artworks which give rise to a thoughtful analysis. Baert posits the resurgence of the enchanting, pleasurable qualities of art, inextricably linked to the realm of disturbance as the commonality underlying the selection of works in the exhibition.
